Bedminster Green River Restoration Begins at Plot 3

A significant milestone for the Bedminster Green River Restoration was reached this spring.

Following a competitive procurement process led by Bristol City Council, Suttle Projects has been appointed as the main contractor for the first phase of the restoration to be constructed, adjacent to Metalworks student building.

In March, Suttle Projects carried out early site checks, including surveys for wildlife and investigations to understand the ground conditions, ready for the start on site in July this year.  The team will time the work to fit with Environment Agency restrictions that protect fish and other wildlife at sensitive times of year.

This work marks the first stage of a wider programme to improve the River Malago through Bedminster Green. The river runs through three of the five plots in the area, and the council will deliver the restoration in phases alongside development on the surrounding sites.

The council has also appointed AtkinsRéalis to manage the project on site and help keep the work safe and on track.

Once complete, the Plot 3 work will:

  • make the river feel more natural, with better features in the channel
  • improve habitats for wildlife and support biodiversity
  • create greener, more welcoming spaces and routes for people to use and enjoy
  • help reduce the risk of flooding in the local area
