Improvements at Windmill Hill City Farm
Over the past year, visitors to Windmill Hill City Farm will have noticed some big changes taking place. These works were linked to the installation of the new Bristol Heat Network pipeline, which runs through part of the farm’s allotment area.
The route was chosen after careful consideration to minimise disruption, because Whitehouse Lane was already congested with many underground services.
Importantly, farm staff and allotment holders were closely involved throughout the process, helping to shape decisions and ensure the scheme worked for everyone who uses this much-loved community space.
As part of the agreement, Vattenfall committed to a package of enhancement works to leave the farm better than before.
The benefits can now be clearly seen. Allotments have been upgraded with new timber surrounds and improved grassed areas, making them more practical and pleasant to use. The former Percy Street goods access road has been resurfaced, improving access for deliveries and users alike. Paths around the garden area have been renewed, creating a safer and smoother route for daily activities and events.
Accessibility has also been improved, with upgraded ramps providing better access for wheelchair users. Along Whitehouse Lane and Phillip Street, new boundary fencing and an improved goods access gate have helped tidy the site and improve security, while clearly defining the farm’s edges within the neighbourhood.
These works are now complete and have been welcomed by Windmill Hill City Farm’s staff, volunteers and allotment holders.
