An Update on Whitehouse Lane Works

During works to improve highway infrastructure along Whitehouse Lane, a void was discovered underneath the centre of the road. Further investigation discovered the cause of the void is due to a collapse of a section of brick sewer. The sewer is over 150 years old and used to serve terraced housing on Whitehouse Lane before the existing industrial units were built. At this stage we do not know why the sewer has collapsed; works were not in progress above the sewer when the void was discovered.

Bristol City Council and ETM contractors are currently engaging with the sewer authority (Wessex Water) regarding the repair of the sewer, to determine how this will be completed. We will report back with further information as soon as possible.

We apologise for the disruption this is causing and hope you can appreciate that investigating the void under the road was the right course of action in these circumstances. The road would have been at risk of collapse if it had been left without remedial action.

Access to Whitehouse Lane is being maintained while engagement takes place with Wessex Water.

Road closure – Sunday 11 May

We also wish to inform you that Hereford Street and Whitehouse Lane will be closed for one day on Sunday 11 May. The road will be closed to dig trial pits which will help plan the full resurfacing of the road over the summer. It will show if the existing construction of the road is inadequate in any areas, which can then be rectified as part of the resurfacing work.

The closure will be for one day only and signage will be displayed on site for information. We trust that by undertaking this work on a Sunday it will minimise impact to businesses on Whitehouse Lane.

We apologise for the ongoing inconvenience this has caused.
