Contractor appointed for first phase of river restoration works
A contractor has been appointed to deliver the first phase of the transformation of the River Malago and its surrounding environment, marking the first step in this major river restoration scheme.
Suttle Projects successfully bid for the work this summer. Suttle Projects is a family-owned civil engineering firm with a legacy dating back to the 1930s. They deliver innovative solutions across rail, highways, coastal, marine, and environmental sectors.
Their portfolio includes complex infrastructure works that balance engineering precision with environmental sensitivity which will make them a strong fit for the River Restoration scheme at Bedminster Green.
The first phase of construction will begin in June 2026, adjacent to the Metalworks student accommodation building, alongside Clarke Street. The works will be carefully timed to comply with fishery restrictions set by the Environment Agency, ensuring protection of local aquatic life during sensitive periods.
This phase of the river restoration will focus on re-naturalising the river channel, improving biodiversity, and creating a more accessible and attractive public space. The scheme will deliver:
- improved ecological health of the River Malago through habitat creation and water quality enhancements
- new green spaces for residents, students, and visitors to enjoy, supporting wellbeing and community connection
- flood resilience measures to help manage surface water and reduce local flood risk
- enhanced pedestrian routes and public realm improvements that link key areas of Bedminster Green
The restoration works are part of a wider regeneration programme for Bedminster Green, which includes housing, transport and public art initiatives.
One such initiative is A River’s Song, a community music and art project led by composer Liam Taylor-West. Commissioned by Bristol City Council and delivered by Ginkgo Projects, the residency invites local musicians and residents to co-create a new composition inspired by the River Malago and its stories. The resulting work will be professionally recorded and shared through a public exhibition and permanent sound installation along the river path, celebrating the area’s unique character and ecology.
Together, the river restoration and public art programme aim to reconnect people with the river, foster pride in place, and support a greener, more inclusive future for Bedminster Green.
