Metalworks public art in progress: updates from Common Threads and A River’s Path residencies

As part of the Futureweave public art strategy, two artist residencies at Metal Works — the first occupied building in the Bedminster Green regeneration — are bringing creativity, connection, and community engagement to the new development. 

Common Threads with Leeza Awojobi 

Leeza Awojobi, a Bristol-based restorative poet, has been weaving together stories, cultures, and perspectives through her residency Common Threads. Her work invites residents to reflect on what it means to live together in a diverse and changing neighbourhood. 

Recent highlights include: 

• Poetry gatherings and Peace Feasts hosted in collaboration with local organisations at Windmill Hill City Farm 

• Listening Spaces where residents share personal reflections and explore community values 

• Creative workshops exploring identity, belonging, and shared futures 

Leeza’s approach combines poetry, community mediation, and cultural storytelling. Creating spaces where people feel heard, seen, and inspired. 

A River’s Path with Liam Taylor-West 

Liam Taylor-West, an award-winning composer and audiovisual artist, is leading A River’s Path, a residency focused on the River Malago and the green and blue spaces surrounding Bedminster Green. 

His current project, A River’s Song, sees him collaborate with local people through workshops and recording sessions to create a new piece of music inspired by the River Malago. 

This collaborative music and art project celebrates the ecology, history, and emotional resonance of the river. Turning community voices into a living soundtrack for the area.

Leeza will be hosting a public sharing event at 7pm on 15 October at Windmill Hill City Farm, keep an eye on her website or social media for more details. 

Liam is currently inviting local singers, instrumentalists and music makers, as well as residents with a strong connection to the river to collaborate on A River’s Path.
